Pixcell Deer#17, Kohei Nawa | Trans-Cool Tokyo

This exhibit attracts the most attention when a person came into the exhibition hall- Level one at the Trans-Cool Tokyo Collection located in Singapore Art Museum at 8Q.

This Exhibit is placed right at the entrance of the museum. Where no one is able to NOT see it when they open the doors. The deer is placed in the centre of three plane mirrors which are found at both sides and back. Its view was breathe taking. Everyone in the roomwere try to guess if it was a made from a real deer.

This Pixcell-Deer was covered in glass balls of different sizes. Everything space on the deer was covered tight with the balls and creates this magnifying effect when one looks closely at a glass ball itself.

By covering surface of an object with transparent glass beads, the existence of the object itself is replaced by “a husk of light”, and the new vision “the cell of an image” (PixCell) is shown.
Most of the motifs, like stuffed animals are found through the internet. Kohei Nawa did some searching on auction sites and choose from the images which appear on a monitor as pixel. However, the stuffed animals which actually have been purchased and sent have real flesh feel and smell, and have a discrepancy with images on the monitor. I then transpose them to PixCell in turn.

ALTERING REALITY AND PERCEPTION

“Japanese artist have a way of perceiving the world which is often described as idiosyncratic. The mysteries of human perception, its strange nature and innate limitations have inspired many artworks as well as artistic inquiries.”

I felt that this piece of work changes our views on the way we normally take animal exhibits like these for granted. I have learnt to study not only the structure of the exhibit, but the DETAILS. The way this artist magnifies it’s works is to show us the importance of details and the beauty of it. Moreover, the gallery space created was spacious with the help of mirrors was a thoughtful way of letting the audiences view the exhibit in different perspectives.
