Very, very happy victims

Title: Very, very happy victims

Artist: Agung Kurniawan

Materials: Charcoal, conte, pastel on art paper, fixative

Exhibited at Singapore Arts Museum

Charcoal drawings that jump out at you: this is what the exhibition is. The artist has used the contrast of light and dark to his advantage. With the right amount, the drawings came to live and it actually felt like there were two layers of drawings instead of one, like there actually are people hanging behind the glass panels in front of the paintings.

I have always considered paintings to be flat and 2D. However, this shows that with the right dosage of light and shadows, we can make them come to live and , in some way, induce us to interact with their subject.
